On February 6, 1958, the world witnessed a tragic event known as the Munich air disaster. British European Airways flight 609 met with a heartbreaking fate during its third attempt to take off from a snowy runway at Munich-Riem Airport in West Germany. Onboard was the renowned Manchester United football team, affectionately called the “Busby Babes,” along with supporters and journalists. Out of the 44 individuals on the flight, 20 lost their lives at the crash site. The injured, some of whom were unresponsive, were quickly taken to Rechts der Isar Hospital in Munich, where three additional victims succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total death toll to 23, while 21 passengers survived.
