On February 6, 1958, a heartbreaking incident known as the Munich air disaster occurred when British European Airways flight 609 crashed during its third attempt to take off from a slushy runway at Munich-Riem Airport in West Germany. Onboard was the celebrated Manchester United football team, fondly referred to as the “Busby Babes,” alongside several fans and journalists. Out of the 44 people on board, 20 tragically lost their lives at the crash site. The injured, some of whom were unconscious, were swiftly transported to Rechts der Isar Hospital in Munich, where an additional three succumbed to their injuries, raising the total death toll to 23, with only 21 survivors.
