On February 6, 1958, a devastating incident known as the Munich air disaster occurred when British European Airways flight 609 crashed during its third takeoff attempt from a slushy runway at Munich-Riem Airport in West Germany. Onboard were members of the illustrious Manchester United football team, affectionately referred to as the “Busby Babes,” along with several fans and journalists. Out of the 44 people on the flight, 20 tragically lost their lives at the crash site. The injured passengers, some left unconscious, were swiftly transported to Rechts der Isar Hospital in Munich, where an additional three individuals succumbed to their injuries, raising the death toll to 23, with just 21 survivors.
